| 1 | How to communicate: When presented with a preferred item the student will pick up the picture of that preferred item, hand it to the communicative partner, placing and releasing it into the communicative partner’s hand. |
| 2 | Distance and persistence: The student will go to his or her communication board, take a picture from the board, go to the teacher, get the teacher’s attention, and release the chosen picture into the teacher’s hand. |
| 3 | Picture discrimination: The student will request desired items by going to the communication book, selecting from an array of pictures the appropriate picture, and giving him the picture. |
